RECENT WORKS Marcel Duchamp. new findings in Boîte-en-valise.

L.H.O.O.Q. a well known rectified Readymade by Marcel Duchamp was the starting point for this amazing installation of Fabrizio Ruggiero.

Marcel Duchamp created L.H.O.O.Q. by taking a cheap print of the Mona Lisa and adding a moustache, goatee, and lascivious pun (understood when the letters L-H-O-O-Q are pronounced rapidly in French to mean "she's got a hot ass").

According to Duchamp not the technical skill, simply a manual work, but the very act of choosing, an act of the mind, a different attitude towards reality, adds aesthetic value to the artwork.

“Ready-made” as an artistic operation was born, where any object already existing, then neither designed nor planned, is shown as “artwork”. This idea has been predominating in the visual arts world from early XX century to nowadays.

Fabrizio Ruggiero observes that “technical skill”, in visual arts, can be a very sophisticated process, that is a very deep mental action, and that there are new fields in which the art of painting can be expressed.

Using Appropriation, the use of borrowed elements in the creation of new work, Fabrizio Ruggiero painted a Fresco portrait of Marcel Duchamp and catapulted it in contemporary world adding several metal piercing, a fashion in vogue among young people. In this way Fabrizio Ruggiero plays an action similar to Marcel Duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q. adding also the quality of a well made artwork.

The fresco is part of the installation “new findings in the Boîte-en-valise”.

Boîte-en-valise”, box in a suitcase, is a portable miniature monograph including sixty-nine reproductions of the artist's own work. Between 1935 and 1940, Marcel Duchamp created an edition of twenty boxes, each one with slight variations in design and content.

Fabrizio Ruggiero plays with the cult for modern-art –stars creating a huge red Boîte-en-valise” (more than two meters long) in a bi-dimensional trompe l'oeil out of which the Marcel Duchamp's portrait with piercing comes out.

The installation includes a small fresco with sand a plaster with the inscription “POSSIBLE”, another quotation from a Duchamp's work and a large “ Nu descendant un escalier ” in blue on paper.
