T O R S O S The torso, from the Latin Tursus, is the true pulsating centre of the human body. There are some places in the world where one feels proud to be a member of the human race. One of these is certainly Angkor. Behind the sophisticated and intellectual beauty of Angkor there is something profoundly simple, archetypal, natural that reaches the chest without having to go through the head. I was impressed by the great energetic power that emanates from the statues of Khmer art whose slender and graceful features convey a harmonious and elegant image. I found, in the statues of Khmer art, the same strong energy that springs from the Egyptian sculptures of the Saite period. In a special way in the"Torsos" the true pulsating centre of the human body. The same strong energy that in Greek Archaic Sculpture, gushes out from the kouroi ("boys") and korai ("maidens"), youthful human figures, respectively male and female, at the culmination of intellectual and physical development, not yet touched by decline. I selected some of my sketches for prints in limited edition of 10+2 spacimen each. |
