Through a series of "ALLOVER PATTERN", Fabrizio Ruggiero offers a reflection on the practice of fresco painting in contemporary art and on the process behind this particular mode where iconography becomes secondary with respect to the process of construction and visual communication of pictorial matter.
In the "ALLOVER PATTERN", by eliminating directionality, spatial illusionism and the relationship between the parts and the whole, the classic typological elements of a picture, it becomes easier to bring out the structure, or better, the painting as structure. At the same time the use of regular pattern pushes the illusory space beyond the edges of the painting. The pattern, having reached the margins of the painting, tends to expand visually suggesting a wider design that can only be completed mentally in the space outside the painting, the space of the observer.
From this point of view, the form and the format of the picture become fundamental, intended not as an empty space to fill up but as the generating principle of the painting, its structure and its substance. |
